Things to see near Rimini on Holiday

Ideas and tips for discovering
the most authentic Romagna

If you're wondering what to see near Rimini during your holiday, you'll be pleased to know that, as well as the sea, the inland area is full of charming villages, stunning views, and authentic experiences. Just a few kilometers from the coast, you can discover some of the most beautiful places near Rimini, perfect for a half-day trip or a different kind of evening out.
Many guests choose to spend some days at the beach followed by excursions in the surrounding area, visiting villages such as Gradara, San Leo, or San Marino. These places are rich in history, offer breathtaking views, and boast a truly unique atmosphere, making them ideal for those who want to discover the most authentic side of Romagna.

Charming villages and beautiful places near Rimini

Within a few kilometers of Rimini lie some of the most beautiful villages in Romagna and Marche.

Gradara

Also known as the Capital of the Middle Ages, Gradara is famous for its imposing castle, which was the setting for the tragic love story between Paolo and Francesca, mentioned by Dante Alighieri in The Divine Comedy. The village, an Orange Flag location, is very well preserved, and its medieval alleys are still home to workshops, souvenir shops, and traditional restaurants.
Every summer, events like Magic Castle draw tourists and local families, while historical reenactments featuring fireworks displays, such as the Siege of the Castle, liven up summer evenings every two years. For children (and adults too) the Teatro dell’Aria hosts shows featuring birds of prey, educational activities, and falconry courses.

Gradara is a short drive away and easy to reach from Rimini in about 30 minutes by car.
Local tip
Although it may seem like a very touristy activity, it’s worth visiting the fortress to learn about its history and how it has been preserved over the years. Be sure to pick up tickets for the Ronda Walkways as well, so you can admire the village from above and the surrounding countryside stretching all the way to the sea.

Montefiore Conca

Montefiore Conca is one of the most charming villages in Rimini’s hinterland and is part of the Touring Club Italiano’s Orange Flag villages. Its symbol is the imposing Malatesta Fortress, which overlooks the entire Valconca valley and offers breathtaking views stretching all the way to the sea.
The fortress is also linked to one of Romagna’s most fascinating legends: the story of Costanza Malatesta, a young noblewoman who, according to local tales, still wanders through the castle rooms today.
The guided tour is engaging and well organised, bringing the history of the castle vividly to life. There is also no shortage of stories tied to the fortress’s more mysterious side: guides often recount tales of objects inside the display cases that seem to move on their own, or the strands of wool on an ancient spindle mysteriously shifting without anyone touching them.
Montefiore Conca is just a short drive from Rimini and can easily be reached in around 40 minutes by car.
Local tip
Head up to the fortress in the late afternoon, when the sunset lights up the Valconca hills and the sea in the distance, creating a special atmosphere, especially on summer evenings, when the village comes alive with outdoor restaurants and small events.

San Leo

Perched on a limestone cliff, San Leo—awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club Italiano—overlooks the valley below with a breathtaking view.
The fortress, rebuilt in the 15th century by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, has housed prisoners of all kinds over the centuries, including the famous Count Cagliostro, an alchemist and enigmatic figure of the 18th century.
As you stroll through the small historic center, you can also visit two Romanesque gems: the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the oldest religious buildings in the Montefeltro region, and the Cathedral of San Leone, built of stone and overlooking a picturesque square with panoramic views.

San Leo is within easy reach of Rimini, about 45 minutes away by car.
Local tip
If you can, visit San Leo during one of the events centered around esoteric traditions and mystery, such as AlchimiAlchimie, when the village comes alive with performances, lectures, and an enchanting atmosphere.

Pennabilli

Pennabilli is one of those places best discovered slowly, wandering through quiet alleyways, panoramic viewpoints, and small squares overlooking the rolling hills of Montefeltro. It was home to the poet and screenwriter Tonino Guerra, who left many traces of his imagination throughout the village, including the charming Garden of Forgotten Fruits, where rare ancient varieties of fruit trees and plants are still preserved.
As you stroll through the historic centre, you’ll also come across antique shops and small artisan boutiques, perfect for anyone who loves browsing unique objects from the past. Pennabilli is also home to a truly unusual story: this is where you’ll find a replica of the Bell of Lhasa, inaugurated in 2005 by the Dalai Lama in honour of Fra Orazio da Pennabilli, the Capuchin missionary who travelled from this small village to Tibet in the 18th century to spread Christianity.
The village becomes especially lively in summer during Artisti in Piazza, one of Italy’s best-loved street art festivals, when squares and alleyways turn into an open-air stage filled with performances, music, and shows.

Pennabilli is slightly farther from Rimini but can still be comfortably reached in around one hour by car.
Local tip
Don’t stop at the main square. Pennabilli is best explored slowly, wandering through its quiet streets, following the traces of Tonino Guerra, and enjoying the views over the Valmarecchia valley.

San Marino

About 30 minutes from Rimini lies the Republic of San Marino, one of Europe's smallest countries and also one of the oldest in the world. Perched on Mount Titano, this small republic has preserved its independence for centuries and is known as the Ancient Land of Freedom. The historic center, along with the mountain on which it stands, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Don’t miss the iconic landmarks: the three towers—Guaita, Cesta, and Montale—offering stunning views of the valley and the sea; the Palazzo Pubblico, the political and historical heart of the Republic; the Pieve, an elegant Romanesque church; and the Passo delle Streghe, a cliff-top path offering one of the most picturesque views in the Republic.
San Marino is close by and easy to reach from Rimini in about 30 minutes by car or bus (check here for the Rimini Shuttle schedule and stops)
Love shopping? Then don’t miss San Marino Outlet Experience in Falciano: just a few minutes from the road connecting Rimini to San Marino, you’ll find a large shopping mall with outlet stores from brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro, Roberto Cavalli, Fratelli Rossetti, Guess, Pinko, Furla, Timberland, and The North Face. If you’re a perfume lover, the historic center of San Marino is also known for its many perfume shops with very convenient prices.
Local tip
Visit San Marino in the late afternoon and stop at Passo delle Streghe at sunset.
The golden evening light illuminates the surrounding landscape, making everything even more magical!
